HANDOUT--QUIZ tomorrow. Handout was given today. Complete Part I. Answer questions 1-4 for picture #1 on page R18 in your text.
Also, study your terminologies for question words, conjugations of the ver ser in the present tense. Go over exercises R12--A, B; R19--A.
Today we went over pg. R12, R14, adjectives. We gave a comparison of the verbs ser and estar.
I. First difference
Ser=Used for an intrinsic characteristic of something or someone. Example: El es rubio. El es feliz. = In the case of El es feliz=He is a happy person.
Estar=Used for a state of being caused by something or someone. Example. El esta feliz. Here, we are saying that he is happy today, now, as a consequence of something that made him happy. Perhaps he won the lottery or got an A on an exam. It could be that he could lose all of it tomorrow and consequently be unhappy. He is not happy ALL the time as a way of life, but that he became happy.

II. Another difference:
Estar==Used for the location of something or someone IN SPACE. eXAMPLE:
Donde esta Juan? Juan esta en la cafeteria.==This tells us the location of a person in space.
Ser=Used for the location of conferences, classes, events, etc.
Example: Donde es la clase de espanol? La clase de espanol es el el aula A-121.
In this case we are telling the location of a class. We use ser for these types of locations. They are not things that you can move from one place to another. When there is a conference or a class, it is not something that you can just pick up and move.

Today various pupils wrote on the board their descriptions of the pictures on page R14. We discussed various adjectives describing people and things.

Study for a QUIZ tomorrow--days of the week, how to tell the date, and your pictures on the alphabet song. This will be an ORAL quiz. You will say these things without looking at your paper. You must know them by memory. The teacher will call individual students to recite IN SPANISH, these things. You must have perfect pronunciation==meaning that you must pronounce every vowel and consonant the way that we have been doing in class. You must know how to answer the questions asked.
