Of all the muscles on your face those around your mouth are the muscles which have most developed. No wonder there are so many of them.

Musculus risorius contracts to pull both ends of the mouth outwards. This movement is the most important of all. That is why this muscle is called the "smiling muscle".

Four other muscles cooperate to make a smile. They are musculus angularis, musculus infraorbitalis, musculus zygomaticus and musculus caninus. They help when you lift your upper lip to smile.
