When you wink, the periorbital muscles are very active. Humans have two
muscles around the eyes: musculus orbicularis oculi, and musculus corrugator
supercilii. The musculus orbicularis oculi can be divided into two parts,
and one of them, the orbital part mainly works when you wink.
The musculus corrugator supercilii moves only a little, but when this
small muscle contracts, the eye-brows are pulled downward to make the wink
more attractive.
The third muscle, musculus procerus, remains still. If it works,
the skin between the eye-brows is lowered and you look somewhat
unhappy.
