U.S. Civil War, enlisted in Kansas
He enlisted on the 8th day of February, 1862, and was assigned to
Troop "G", 4th Regiment of the U.S. Cavalry. He was discharged at
Gravelly Springs, Alabama, February 8, 1865, at the completion of his
services as a bugler. He is reported present for duty muster rolls
during service. His commanding officer was J. B. McIntyre.
His troop participated in raids around Atlanta, Georgia under the
command of General Kilpatrick, and scouting through Tennessee under
the command of Major General Wilson, under Gil Thomas.
Troop "G" was stationed on October 31, 1864, near Rome, Georgia. They
left Rome and marched to Chattanooga via Dalton and Ringgold, and from
there to Nashville via McMinville. They participated in the actions
at that place and continued in the pursuit of Hood's Army to the
Tennessee River. They were stationed near Bulls Mills, Alabama,
December 31, 1864. From there the marched to Athens, Alabama and then
to Huntsville, returning to Athens January 3, 1865. Then they marched
to Elk River and then to Florence, Alabama, January 11, 1865. From
Florence they marched to Gravelly Springs, then to Waterloo, then back
to Gravelly Springs, where they remained until February 28, 1865.

forom you. Well faney, you said you ware again to take ride on that
excursion Saterday. I wish that I cold go with you. If it was Sun. I
cud, but you will haf to excuse me this time for I cant go this time,
for if I do, I will trade my plase on the railroad, but if you can
enjoy yourself you can go.
Well Faney, I gess that you think I hadn't that for a excuse, but you
must not think that for I can't you. But I am coming out thare before
long. Wel faney, you thought that unable. You was sweet, but if you
was to take to me more and you wuld not take to him no more. Wel, I
guess I will half to bring my few reminders to a close. Apples is good
and peaches is beter. And if you like me you will ancer this leter.
