Volunteer Opportunities

Public Relations Committee: This committee is responsible for informing people in the community about Habitat’s work in a manner that encourages support. The audience in the community includes individuals, churches, neighborhoods, other community groups, businesses, and government, particularly local government (city council, county commission, etc.)

Construction Committee: This committee is responsible for both construction planning and implementation of the plan. It recommends policy to the board, builds houses to fit selected building lots, works with and trains volunteers and potential homeowners, and works closely with the Site Selection Committee. Volunteer labor is used as much as possible. No prior experience is necessary.

Family Selection: This committee screens applications, interviews prospective families and recommends families to the Board for approval for home ownership. Family selection requires people who are sensitive and relate well with people on a one-to-one basis. All committee members will make home visits and should feel comfortable interviewing potential homeowners.

Family Nurture Committee: the goal of this committee is to nurture and help families get out of the poverty cycle and become independent. The committee seeks to welcome new families into the Habitat family and provide them with a mutual support system, educational opportunities, and a forum for discussion pertaining to Habitat home-ownership.

Fund Development Committee: Fund raising/development involves a variety of tasks including grant proposal writing, researching, telephoning, and letter writing. This committee needs people who can develop creative fund raising ideas and help implement them successfully.

Site Selection Committee: This Committee targets areas of the community for development. Once an area is targeted, it is this committee’s responsibility to recommend property acquisition to the Board.

Volunteer Committee: This committee recruits volunteers and provides orientation and training. The committee makes telephone calls to provide volunteers for all other committees.

Finance Committee: This Committee develops the annual budget, keeps track of the financial transactions of the organization, and maintains the financial records.

Hospitality Committee: This Committee is responsible for locating suppliers and scheduling meals for volunteers working at the construction site.

Interfaith Relations Committee: This committee works with community churches and synagogues to recruit volunteers and raise funds to support Habitat’s projects.
