Basic Safety Guidelines for Volunteers
NOTE: Construction Supervisors wear red hats with the HFHNMC Logo or White Hard Hats with Red Stripes
Basics:
- Safety is the responsibility of each volunteer.
- Report unsafe conditions to a construction supervisor.
- If you are unsure about how to do a task, ask a construction supervisor.
Safety Equipment & Attire:
- Wear a hard hat when instructed to do so.
- Wear safety glasses when operating power saws or other equipment that may throw off small particles.
- Wear gloves when handling wood or metal products.
- Dust masks should be worn when installing insulation.
- Do not wear sandals or other inappropriate footwear on the worksite, work boots are preferable.
Injuries:
- If you are injured, report it immediately to a construction supervisor.
- An accident form must be completed for any injury, however minor.
Tools:
- Do not use hand or power tools with which you are not familiar, ask a Construction Supervisor for instructions.
- Do not carry power tools by their cords.
Ladders:
- Do not move extension ladders by yourself.
- Check with a Construction Supervisor to assure ladder is extended at the appropriate angle & height.
- When climbing a ladder, always face the ladder.
- Do not extend your arms beyond your normal reach when on a ladder.
Roof Work:
- Wear a safety harness or a suitable alternative personal fall arrest system when working on a roof.
- Keep body weight towards the apex of the roof.
- If you have a fear of heights, do not volunteer to work on the roof.
Lifting:
- Do not lift heavy objects or materials without help. Lift with your legs, not your back or arms.
Other:
- Be aware of floor openings when walking.
- Keep the work site clean and safe.
FAILURE TO F0LL0W THE ABOVE GUIDELINES WILL RESULT IN YOUR BEING ASKED TO LEAVE THE WORK SITE.
Volunteer Groups:
All Volunteer Groups must have a designated Group Leader.
