How to Qualify to Live in a HFHLB House

TO QUALIFY

To qualify for out home ownership program, applicant families must:

  • Be U.S. citizens.
  • Be a resident of, or work in, Northeast Monmouth County, NJ.
  • Currently live in sub-standard housing (e.g., poor heating, plumbing or electricity, leaks in roof, overcrowding, unsafe area).
  • Earn $25,000 to $37,500 per year.
  • Volunteer at least 30 hours with HFHLB in construction or committee projects.
After Qualifying

After qualifying, the family must volunteer at least 420 additional hours of "sweat equity" prior to purchasing the home.

Habitat houses are not free. The new homeowner is expected to repay a no-interest mortgage to HFHLB over 20-30 years. (The monthly payments are about the same as the monthly rent the family previously paid for housing.) The homeowner is also responsible for all taxes, utilities, and home maintenance.

To request an application, contact us. If you call our voice mail (732-728-0441), select option 2 for home ownership. Be sure to give us your name, address, and phone number. The Family Selection Committee will call you and answer any questions you may have.
